# Treat the space under your bed like a small cabinet
Under-bed storage often fails because it becomes a single dark container for unrelated things. Before buying bins, measure the usable height, width, and depth. Leave room for handles and floor protection, then divide the space by frequency of use.
## Keep daily items closest
Place workout clothes, spare bedding, or frequently worn shoes near the easiest side of the bed. Seasonal linens and special-occasion items can sit farther back. Avoid storing loose objects. Use shallow, lidded containers that slide independently so you never have to remove everything to reach one category.
## Label the short edge
Labels should face outward and describe one category: “winter bedding,” “guest linens,” or “running gear.” Clear bins help, but a label is faster than scanning a stack. Add a small inventory card inside the lid for items you rarely use.
## Protect fabric and floors
Wash and fully dry textiles before packing. Breathable fabric bags suit clean linens; sealed plastic works better where dust or moisture is a concern. Add felt pads under rigid bins on wood floors and avoid overfilling containers until their lids bow.
Review the area when seasons change. Remove anything you did not use during the previous cycle and return misplaced items to their proper homes. The space stays useful when every bin has a narrow purpose and a regular review date—not when it hides everything that lacks a decision.
